WWII Then and Now
the ruins of the Abbey of Mont Saint-Éloi stood majestically above the landscape. This strategic position made it a vital observation point during WWI, and its ruined towers still bear witness to the intense battles fought here.A mighty sight in the evening sun#MontSaintEloi #WW1 #History #StrategicPoint #WarMemorial #Remembrance #France_Arras ... WWII Then and Now
We literally delved into history with a visit to the Wellington Quarry in Arras (The largest surprise attack of the First World War)! Donning a Tommy helmet, we gained a profound insight into the incredible hardships and challenges faced by soldiers, including many New Zealanders, here during World War I. An unforgettable dive into history!Tip: This museum ( https://www.carrierewellington.com/) is absolutely worth a visit – don't miss it! #WellingtonQuarry #Arras #WW1 #NewZealandSoldiers #TommyHelmet #History #WarHistory #Remembrance #France_Arras ... WWII Then and Now added 10 new photos from May 2 at 5:34 AM — at Vimy Ridge Memorial.

WWII Then and Now
We had a family visit to Vimy Ridge! The passionate Canadian youth guides made history come alive. We were struck by the immense shell craters in "no man's land" and how incredibly close the front lines were. And of course, the truly imposing Canadian National Vimy Memorial dominates the ridge. It's a place that holds many layers of history, even beyond the direct conflict. Interestingly, Adolf Hitler himself visited this very monument in June 1940 during his tour of France after its surrender in WWII. While he served in the Bavarian Reserve Infantry Regiment 16 during WWI and fought in areas like Ypres and the Somme, his unit was coincidentally redirected from Vimy Ridge just weeks before the major Canadian attack in 1917. This visit by Hitler to the memorial is a stark reminder of the complex and often disturbing connections in European history.Exact photo spot: https://maps.app.goo.gl/TpGpu46WNZSwtdMn7A poignant and unforgettable experience.#VimyRidge #WW1 #History #LestWeForget #CanadianMemorial #FrontLines #WarHistory #HitlerVisit #HistoricalConnections #France-Vimy ... WWII Then and Now
On the way back from Paris we stayed overnight in Arras. An often forgotten battle of the great war. This quiet morning we stopped at the monument for the 9th Scottish Division. The thoughts go back more than 100 years...Exact photo spot: https://maps.app.goo.gl/geCJZi6pvkRvyXc26 ... See MoreSee Less

WWII Then and Now
On round tour through the southern part of England. Came across the small Old Sarum (Salisbury) airfield. Operated flying schools and storage for the invasion of Europe. The 'new’ aircraft needed more track space and therefore satellite airfield where put in use foor Spitfires and Hurricanes. Some old shelters are still there but in bad state. De outer brick pillars are clearly visible on the old photos. ... See MoreSee Less
