I was surprised by the enormous collection of objects on display. From impressive cannons to personal belongings of soldiers and even a shovel full of bullet holes. Same place. Same date(!). Worlds apart.Today I’m sitting here on Max-Josefs-Platz with a beer, surrounded by tourists and full terraces. On August 10–11, 1935, the Rosenheim branch of the NSDAP celebrated its 15th anniversary here — with a parade, a tribute to the fallen, and a speech by Adolf Hitler to over 10,000 people. We had a family visit to Vimy Ridge! The passionate Canadian youth guides made history come alive. We were struck by the immense shell craters in "no man's land" and how incredibly close the front lines were. And of course, the truly imposing Canadian National Vimy Memorial dominates the ridge.It's a place that holds many layers of history, even beyond the direct conflict. Interestingly, Adolf Hitler himself visited this very monument in June 1940 during his tour of France after its surrender in WWII. While he served in the Bavarian Reserve Infantry Regiment 16 during WWI and fought in areas like Ypres and the Somme, his unit was coincidentally redirected from Vimy Ridge just weeks before the major Canadian attack in 1917.
